-Director’s biography:
Ophelia Van Wijmeersch is a 21-year old filmmaker from Belgium. She is aiming to make light-hearted drama with a sense of absurdity. She has written and directed her first short film at the London Film School called ‘All Part Of This World’, selected as a Semi-Finalist for the Lisbon Film Rendezvous 2019 festival and included in the Official Selection for the International Peace & Film Festival 2020 and the YVE International Youth Film Festival 2019. Ophelia recently wrote, directed and co-produced the music video ‘Knowing me, Knowing You’ for British singer Susie Webb, which made the Official Selection for the Direct Monthly Online Festival 2019, the Aphrodite Film Awards 2019 and the YVE International Youth Film Festival. The music video is currently broadcast on MENT TV (national music channel in Belgium). These first two projects already show an inclination towards dramatic storytelling incorporating playful elements and a visualization that uses a vibrant colour palette.
Ophelia has previously followed two film courses at the London Film School. In 2016, she participated in the First Film Summer School with Jonas Grimås and in 2017 she attended the workshop Visual Storytelling: An Introduction for Directors, Writers & Producers with Josh Appignanesi.
In April 2019, she assisted the Swedish photographer/documentary maker Anders Hanser on his documentary about pop group ABBA. Ophelia was responsible for the editorial work such as the preparing and taking of the interviews. The documentary is currently in post-production.
In 2018, Ophelia was a member of the jury at two film festivals, the Explore Zone Jury of Film Fest Gent (BE) and the Youth Jury of Film by the Sea (NL).
She is currently studying a Bachelor’s degree in History with a specialization in Film at the University of Ghent. Next year, she will do her Master’s Dissertation about the portrayal of women in film noir.
As part of her studies, Ophelia did an internship at the Belgian National Television (VRT) in 2019 for the television show Nachtwacht (broadcast on Canvas) where she took part in the full production of four episodes. She helped the crew during the shooting of short documentaries for the show, was responsible for the preparing and taking of interviews and did research on the themes of each episode.
Ophelia is fluent in Dutch, English and French, has basic skills in German and notions of Spanish. Language and literature are close to her heart. She also plays the piano and photographs a lot to challenge her creative vision.
Ophelia is currently in pre-production for a new short film. She lives in Ghent, Belgium.
