The Story at a Glance
Airovale begins with life in a steampunk zeppelin village, where airships rule the trade routes across the islands of the South Sea. A mining expedition to the distant Crescent Islands brings young and old together to voyage across a magnetic sea, where copper mines await. Rumors of a hidden temple filled with gold evoke dreams of riches, despite warnings of the treasure’s curse.
The aeronauts depart, including an impoverished young man who seeks his fortune. The tale continues through the mining of the Crescent Islands, but on return the aeronauts encounter an epic storm at sea where the ancient curse is revealed by a witch with control of supernatural clouds and lightning. The decimated fleet of air ships suffer loss of life and cargo, sacrificing weighted treasure in exchange to onboard survivors in the sea. The battered crews return to Airovale with stories of fatal loss, and a gratitude to be coming home.
But one ship was lost in the storm, not to the sea but to the extreme wind, where it was carried for weeks into the forgotten blue of the endless southern sea. The second half of the saga continues as those survivors discover Canyon Myst—a distant mystical island where Mystics — fae and humans thrive. The Mystics offer provisions and repairs to the crew, while encouraging them to quickly return home. The crew sense suspicion in the Mystic’s generosity as the warnings of taking only what is needed unfolds as a Law of Exchange.
Aden, a hunter onboard the ship is sent to gather game with the guidance of a fairy named Kira. Their awkward pairing sets the course for a forbidden romance and discovery of a time dilation between Airovale and Canyon Myst. Once aware of the rapid time passing they rush to alert the crew, who has delayed departure to gather more than coal for the voyage. The distraction of wealth becomes the risk in Deceptive Time.
The romantic entanglement between Kira and Aden is discovered by her betrothed, setting the stage for a battle to the death in The Duel. Aden chooses to remain on the island, and is victorious in the duel, but the rules are different on Canyon Myst and he is sentenced to death for taking a life. His uncertain future and the outcome of the crew who departed the island with riches sets the tragic stage in The Long Night.
Revelations of the island’s past become a plan for Kira to rescue Aden from prison before his execution. Aided by fellow fae guardians, she rescues Aden and they escape to the forbidden river where the ancient world and a time portal await. The outcome is part of the Airovale story that continues through the Mystic Portal.
