It took 4 years to finish the project and he didn’t paint again for 24 more years…when he returned to paint the Last Judgement in the same chapel. Michelangelo was a sculptor, who had only painted a few frescoes yet his talent was so enormous that he was able to create the most famous ceiling in the world. He was only 32 when he started–had already created the La Pieta and David sculptures by this time! The ceiling was brutal, a height of 66 feet above the floor, and the artist made notes of how painful it was to work in acrobatic poses to reach the surfaces.
